Now that you have found vehicles you are interested
in, and performed a thorough
inspection of the
vehicles, you are ready to jump into the bidding process.
This is a quick process, and very much like what you
might expect of an auto auction. The auctioneers conduct this
process with lightning speed. It is to their benefit to move as many
vehicles as possible, in the shortest amount of time. It would be a
very good idea to actually watch the process a few times before
jumping in yourself.
Now it's your turn. Before you enter, you should have
purchased a buying guide such as N.A.D.A (which is usually available
for sale at the auction site), and have a pretty good idea of the
price range you want to pay, using the guide as a
reference.
There are usually two (basic) types of auctions. The
type of auction will usually be indicated by a set of lights above
(or around) the auctioneer's tower.
- Green Light:
This type of auction usually provides for some sort of recourse
after you purchase the vehicle, should you find
certain problems after the purchase. This will not
allow for a release from your contract for cosmetic, or minor
problems, nor will it allow for release
from contract for
problems that you should have been aware of after your
inspection. It, in most cases, only allows for a release of
contract for major issues that could not have
possibly been detected upon reasonable inspection of the vehicle
prior to sale.
- Red Light: This
is an "as is" sale. Most of the vehicles in these types of
auctions sell for less because of the risk involved, but, the
only recourse on this type of sale is one offered because of
obvious fraud on the part of the seller. Only an
experienced mechanic, or dealer should attempt to purchase
vehicles in these type of auctions.
Remember - if at any point you have concerns,
end your bidding and wait for the next vehicle to come through.
Don't get caught up in a "bidding war". In the end, such a "war"
will cause you to pay too much. Let the less educated bidder
over pay. You're there to find a deal!
